FAQ

Q:
Are these products really 100% compatible with the Treo 700w?

A:
Yes, to the best of my knowledge all the software listed here
is totally compatible with the Treo 700w.

All commercial products, except where stated otherwise, have
been confirmed by the developers themeselves. If you look on the
product listings on the product website, you should see a
reference to compatibility...Square screen, Treo 700w, WM5, etc.

In order to be listed on this blog, the software has to show
evidence that it is compatible with square screens and WM5.
The evidence can be provided either by the developers or through
tests by Treo 700w users. (continued...)

In some cases, compatibility has been determined by direct
testing of the product by myself or another Treo 700w user.

This is necessary because lots of product is fully compatible
with the Treo 700w but for some reason the developers have not
mentioned the Treo 700w in their listing. This is a big
over-sight in my opinion and this blog is an attempt to
correct this problem.

Free software has mostly been confirmed by actual testing by
users and is sometimes listed by the developers as well.

Software listed here, is not necessarily a recommendation of
of the product by the author but is for information purposes
only.

Be sure to try the software first before purchasing it. Not for
compatibility, but mainly to be sure the software lives up to
your expectations.

If you should have any compatibility problems, please report
them using the information on the Contact page.

Q:
Why did you start the list?

A:
Finding quality software that fit the Treo 700w's square screen
and worked with WM5 was a problem for me so I had to do a lot
of investigating to find compatible apps for my own device.
It was as a real chore.

It became a daily ritual to search for new compatible software,
so since I was compiling a list for myself, I decided to
share it with other Treo 700w users.

Q:
What is the purpose of the email list?

A:
It's an easy way for busy folks to stay abreast of what's
new in Treo 700w software without having to visit the blog.

The email list is a weekly synopis of software that has been
added to the blog during the previous week.

Your email address is confidential and will not be shared
with anyone.

Q:
Most of the links go to PocketGear.com. What's the reason for that?

A:
PocketGear maintains a large database of Pocket PC software and is
a useful tool for finding Treo 700w compatible software.

I use their site daily (among others) to find software and download
trials for testing purposes. I also use their descriptions to create
content for each product.

So it only seems fair that the product links point back to their website.

Also, as a developer who has sold lots of my own products with them, I can truthfully say that these are good people to deal with. It's also where
I shop for my own software.

Q:
Is money being made off the blog?

A:
Yes, the blog makes a small percentage if someone buys anything using the
links on this website.

No one's getting rich by any means and anything purchased here also benefits
the software developers directly so that they will keep making quality Treo 700w software.

Profits from the blog are spent on making the blog a more interesting and useful place to be for Treo 700w users. The more purchases visitors make, the better the blog can become.

There's no extra cost to the user and if you visit the "Special Offers" page frequently enough, you may be able to get your purchase at a considerable discount.

After testing the software yourself, if you make a decision to buy the software, why not consider using the links on the blog and in the newsletter to make your purchases?

BUT -- only buy here if you agree that the blog has been a useful resource and in your mind has earned it.

It helps support the blog and developers directly and I want to thank
those of you who have already made it a point to buy your software here.

Isotope244 Games

Game software is hard to review because what's fun for one person
may not be fun for another. So using trials are the order of the day
if you really want to be sure before you buy a game for yourself.

However, when it comes to production standards, that's another story.

I've developed a couple of games myself (see below) and I've been
a multimedia developer since 1995 so I guess I know a thing or two
about quality in this area.

Isotope244 is a company that develops lots of multimedia projects
including a few Pocket PC games.

I've played all their games and I find them to be extremely well designed.

The graphics are exceptionally rich in all their games but especially
in the Atomic Battle Dragons game.

My favorite game is Atomic Cannon which I've played for around a year now. The play is simple, the animations are cool and it's a fun way to pass a little time.

If you like Breakout style action Ackys Breakout is sure to please you.

All the games have great game music and sound effects to add to the realism and fun of game play.

And they're all 240x240, Treo 700w compatible too boot.

The only thing that is a little disappointing with Isotope244 is that
they haven't done any 3D style games yet that could take advantage of
the special WM5 3D gamimg features.

However, it wouldn't surprise me if they come out with one later
this year though I really can't say that with any certainty.

What leads me to believe this is that Isotope244 has a record
of producing top quality games that people enjoy playing and 3D is
certainly in demand with gamers.

All in all, I highly recommend you visit them and look at what
they have to offer.

If you're at all interested in the game genres they offer, I doubt
you'll be disappointed.

Game Editor

Have you ever wished you could make your own games for the Treo 700w?

Well, now you can make great games for your square screen devices using
Game Editor 1.3.4 by Makslane Araujo.

I love finding gems like this one. (continued...)

It's a complete development tool that not only creates PDA and Smartphone
games but also desktop Windows and Linux games as well. It supports lots
of screen sizes including the 240x240 size we need for Treo 700w games.

All you need to create a game is some graphics, sounds, a few commands and a little patience.

Designed for beginners and pros alike, it has lots of demos, tutorials and
an online community that makes getting started easy.

If you hit a roadblock, and can't find the answer on the forum, you can even
contact Makslane the creator himself. He will usually get back to you with
a response pretty quickly. Try doing that with Visual Studio 2005.

I've been using it myself to create some simple games for around a year now.
Tire Tossin is a game I whipped up in about a 10 days. Try out the demo to see what I was able to accomplish using Game Editor plus a few graphics and sounds.

There are a few things about the interface that take a little getting used to
for experienced programmers like myself, but after awhile you adjust and
it's actually very efficient.

If I have one crticism, it's that some commands such as sprite rotation could
be easier. Text handling could be better too. However, the software is in
constant development and future updates will most likely address that sort
of thing.

If you want to make a serious game or just want to dabble in it for some
laughs, Game Editor will keep give you everything you need to get started
fast. And at only $14.95 U.S. for a basic license, it's a bargain to boot.

In 30 years, I've NEVER seen a multi-platform, rapid application development
tool that even comes close to offering the kind of value that Game Editor
offers at any price. It's a unique and exceptional product.

Visit the site at http://game-editor.com for more details, view the forum and to download the 30 day trial version.

SOTI Pocket Controller Professional

If you're looking for a useful desktop companion for your Treo 700w, look
no further than SOTI Pocket Contoller Professional 5.

This utility allows you to view your PDA/Smartphone screen and control it from your desktop PC via your ActiveSync connection.

I've been using versions of this great software for a few years since version
3.0 with several pocket pc devices that I've owned over the years and more
lately with the Treo 700w.

In my opinion, the best thing about Pocket Controller is that you can do
remote data entry from your desktop PC. This means that you can edit data
in ALL of your Treo 700w apps using a larger screen (via zoom) and larger keyboard.

A real time saver in many situations like when you need to update lots of records.

Other uses include:

Presentation - An ideal tool for training/presenting mobile software or
mobile devices by projecting your desktop/notebook computer screen

File Synchronization - Synchronize files and folders between your desktop
computer and mobile device

There are many other uses possible only limited by your imagination.

The one feature that is lacking and that I would really like to see added to this great product is a remote registry editor.

This would allow technical users like myself to make changes to the PDA system from the desktop. SOTI, if you're reading this, please take note.

There are lots of other features I could mention that are beyond the scope of
this mini-review so the best thing if you're interested, would be to download
the Pocket Controller Trial and see for yourself what a useful tool this can be.

I use this tool often and highly recommend it if you're in the market for an easy remote data entry, presentation and control utility. At under $35 dollars (at the time of writing) it's worth having in your toolkit.

Do you disagree? Have something worthy to add? Tell me about it by emailing
me at the address on the Contact page. I'll publish your comments
if they're relevant and worthy.

Rants

This is a special area of the blog where I sound off about
issues that I believe adversely affect all Treo 700w users.

For things I like for Treo 700w users, see the Raves section.

The views expressed here are my own opinions based on
observations and personal experiences with the Treo 700w.

June 10, 2006

One of my general peeves with today's PDA's is the lack of storage
space that comes with them.

The Treo 700w comes with 128mb RAM but only has 60MB available for
programs and files. The rest is used up for the WM5 operating system.

This is adequate for simple business users but totally inadequate for
general purpose users like myself.

In my experience, over time, most users will end up with a pelthora of
applications, games, mp3's and videos that they'll want to use with
their Treo 700w's and 60mb won't cover it.

A better minimum storage size would be 1 GB of space. This is ample
room for lots of apps, games and other fun stuff.

I recently found a great deal on a 1 GB SD which I installed, but like the WiFi card, it uses up the expansion slot, so you can have one or the other but not both.

This lack of storage is not crippling usually, but it shows a lack of
understanding of what people are actually doing with their devices these
days. And it's not just a Treo 700w problem.

What I'd really like to see is 1 GB of storage built-in to the Treo 700w
PLUS another expansion slot for SD or Mini-SD.

Memory is cheap again and you can even get a 4 GB SD card for under $100.

And that's at retail, so a manufacturer like Palm should easily be able
to get a deal that will only add a few dollars to the cost of a new unit.

Do that Palm and you'll really have a killer PDA that millions more will
flock to buy.

June 1, 2006

Today's rant is about the lack of a built-in WiFi card for
the Treo 700w.

This is a serious over-sight on the part of Palm designers. What were
they thinking? (continued...)

Did they think that users would not want to take advantage of the free
wireless access that's taking the world by storm? In my neighborhood alone
there are over 200 free access points available.

Did they think that users would naturally want to pay wireless carriers
a hefty fee everytime they wanted to access Internet features?

Whatever they were thinking at the time, they seriously hobbled the 700w
in this area. I'm sure they've paid for it though with sales lost to
competing units and returns of Treo 700w's.

Other PDA/Phone devices like the HP iPaq 6900 come with WiFi built-in so
we know that it's more than feasible to produce.

Hopefully, they will get this right when they update the model.

Until then, we are forced to use third party solutions like the
Spectec SDW-820 802.11b SDIO wireless LAN card.

This causes an additional conflict since there is only one expansion
slot which many people will be using for memory expansion.

This is an unsatisfactory situation and forces me to give Palm a
thumbs-down for not adding a built-in WiFi solution for such an
obvious need on the part of end-users.

Do you disagree? Have something worthy to add? Tell me about it by emailing
me at the address on the Contact page. I'll publish your comments
if they're relevant and worthy.
